His current research interests include working with advanced statistical modeling techniques to analyze zero inflated data with lack of independence between samples, which is the case of most by-catch data from pelagic longline fisheries. Since 2010 he has been responsible for analyzing pelagic fisheries data from the Portuguese Fisheries Research Institute to be presented at ICCAT (Atlantic fisheries) and IOTC (Indian Ocean fisheries). For this he has been working mainly with by-catch species (sharks and sea turtles) and to a less extent with target species (tunas and swordfish). During the last decade he participated in several European and Portuguese funded projects, published more than 35 papers in international peer reviewed journals, presented more than 60 communications and posters in scientific conferences, and peer-reviewed 29 manuscripts for 16 different scientific journals. Dr. Rui Coelho has a PhD in Fisheries Biology (Univ. Algarve, Portugal, 2007), is finishing a M.Sc. in Applied Statistical Analysis (Univ. Évora, Portugal, 2012), and for 2 years was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida (2008-2010). He has more than 10 years experience working with by-catch from commercial fisheries.
